Orphans in Ukraine –
rapid assistance at the front

Amidst the chaos of war, it is primarily orphans who are suffering in the Ukrainian region of Kharkiv.

Many have lost their parents, others have never even met them. An increasing number of children are the result of horrific rapes committed by the Russian occupiers. They are surrendered anonymously.

Fortunately, there are many families in the region who take in the children and give them a home. A chance for a future. But we must help these families, because they themselves barely have enough to survive.

We want to call on you to do this: Together, we will buy enough food, water, and hygiene products for the families and children and deliver them regularly. Together, we will build stoves for the harsh winter in the destroyed family homes and give the families enough firewood until spring.

Together, we ignite the hope of children and families through our support and love. Please become part of this effort and stand by our side.

The Kharkiv crisis: A region in distress

Since February 2022, Ukraine has been suffering from a devastating war that has displaced millions and claimed countless lives. Children are particularly affected: many have lost their parents, had to leave their homes, or live under constant threat.

The Kharkiv region, near the Russian border, is among the hardest-hit areas. It has become a symbol of survival. According to reports from the Ukrainian Ministry of Internal Affairs, over 20,000 civilian buildings in the Kharkiv region have been damaged or destroyed.

The constant threat of rocket attacks and artillery fire forces people to live in makeshift shelters or bunkers. Kharkiv is now primarily inhabited by those who had no opportunity to flee. Elderly people, families without financial means, and those deeply attached to their homeland have chosen to stay.

Children in foster families: The silent crisis

One of the quietest but most serious consequences of the war in the Kharkiv region is the collapse of orphanages. Due to a lack of resources and the precarious situation, many facilities have had to close. The affected children have been placed in foster care or extended families, who are often stretched to their limits. These families struggle daily to meet the children's basic needs – a struggle that is almost impossible to win without external help.

In the Chuguyiv district, there are currently 78 children aged 4 to 18 living in 27 families whom we are helping in a very concrete way and for whom we need your support.

Specifically, the project includes:

  • Food: Weekly packages containing basic foodstuffs that meet the children's calorie needs.

  • Hygiene products: Monthly deliveries to ensure basic hygiene.

  • Winter aid: Provision of wood-burning stoves and firewood to get through the cold months.

This project goes beyond providing essential goods: it shows the children that they are not forgotten and gives foster families the strength to continue. By acting together, we give not only food and warmth, but also trust and confidence.

This is how our local assistance works:

In close cooperation with the Sisters of Saint Joseph in Lviv and the dear Sister Olexia, we utilize existing structures to deliver aid quickly and efficiently to families. Our teams are on the ground to ensure that the aid supplies reach the right people.

  1. Needs analysis: Through our partner organization and the local authorities, we know exactly where and how many children need support.

  2. Purchasing and storage: The necessary goods are purchased in regions with stable infrastructure and stored centrally in church facilities.

  3. Distribution: Weekly deliveries by experienced teams guarantee that families are regularly supplied.
