Empowerment for refugee women
in Izmir

A life of their own and an end to their flight in Izmir – We empower women to become independent of donations and government aid.

In the Turkish port city of Izmir, many Syrian refugee women live with their children and try to survive under difficult conditions.

The war has robbed them of their homeland, their security, and often their sons and husbands. They are considering fleeing again to survive, because access to the job market in Turkey is almost impossible for them and state aid is insufficient.

Continuing their journey is extremely risky and often fatal for the women and especially the children. We must prevent this, and with your support, we can provide concrete help for the women to earn their own money in Turkey and thus support their children. In Izmir, we are therefore working very closely with the Turkish NGO KEP on a textile training program that has already proven very successful in helping women.

Understanding the crisis: Syrian refugees in Turkey

The war in Syria has left millions of people homeless. With over 3.6 million refugees, Turkey has the world's largest refugee population.

Many of the displaced have lost everything and are now struggling in a society that is itself facing economic challenges.

Women, in particular, face enormous obstacles: they are often single mothers, without work permits, and socially isolated due to language barriers. Eighty-four percent of refugees in Izmir and the surrounding area are women, and especially children. The pandemic and increasing tensions in the region have further exacerbated their situation.

Izmir – A city between transit and refuge

Izmir is a key hub for refugees on their way to Europe. But many have chosen to stay, despite an uncertain future. The job market is virtually inaccessible to refugees, and few women find a way to become financially independent. Syrian women in Izmir face not only economic challenges but also social ones: they are often bound by family obligations, while prejudice and discrimination shape their daily lives.

The project: Hope through education and community

Our empowerment project targets Syrian and Turkish women in precarious life situations. The goal is to provide them with a solid foundation for a self-determined life. In close cooperation with the NGO KEP in Izmir, we focus on:

Textile training

The women learn tailoring and textile production to gain access to the textile industry. In over 100 training sessions, they develop skills in sewing, pattern making, and sustainable textile production.

Workshops to strengthen soft skills

Topics such as communication, time management, and conflict resolution foster self-confidence and resilience. These skills are essential not only professionally but also personally.

Social cohesion

Joint activities such as workshops, excursions, and picnics build bridges between cultures and foster exchange between Turkish and Syrian women. The Syrian women's language skills can also improve and solidify much more quickly through interaction with Turkish women.

Support measures

Childcare and food vouchers allow the participants to fully concentrate on the training.

With this project, we are creating more than just professional opportunities: We are empowering women, giving them back their self-determined lives, and promoting social cohesion in a region marked by tension.
